I’m usually a side-to-side rider. When I’m racing, the consistency of my speed and control is derived from the ease with which I can make smooth turns around a corner or down the main drag of a fire road. I can often get away with obnoxious, lazy riding style because it is impossible for me to hit the gas at lightening speed. In other words, I don’t need to swing the bike 90 degrees when I plan to turn left.
This is not to say I am not aware of my center of gravity. It’s always on point. But as the game progresses and I inevitably get more aggressive, I will let some of that old-school aggression slip into my riding style. I may try to whip around a corner, which may breed frustration. With my bike is so much weight, it feels more than it actually is. To suck as much speed out of a corner as possible, I’ll make calculated, precise corners sharper and tighter. And I will also put on the brakes a bit earlier than a better rider might, because I do not want to stall at the apex. Simultaneously, I’m still controlling the bike with the left hand and keeping an account of the position of my feet.
The majority of bike manufacturers have a list of maneuvers that are considered ‘good riding’ and ‘clean riding’. The good rider does not try to push the power to the front wheel. The clean rider takes the passenger bike and rigs up a solution to that problem.
Having spent a good portion of my life on the ‘wrong side’ of the line for bike companies, I believe that most commonly accepted ‘correct’ riding style is best described as ‘lite’.
I used to call myself ‘aggressive’ or ‘aggressive riding’. Then as I ‘rested my bike’ I discovered that aggressive riding was the last thing that was happening. In fact, aggressive riding was too aggressive. There HAS to be some way to cover my weaknesses and still get everyone and everything to the finish line.
