The Essentials: What To Pack for a Canyoning Trip

So you’re thinking about canyoning! This fun, action-packed sport is arguably one of the best ways to explore the world’s vast and mysterious gorges and enjoy all they have to offer. But you should never go canyoning without the right preparations, so grab a backpack and get ready to stuff it with the essentials. Here’s what to pack for a canyoning trip.

Dress for Success

For a canyoning trip, you want to dress in clothes that are basic, comfortable, and easy to move around in. Here’s what your canyoning attire should include:

  • Neoprene socks
  • Long shirt
  • Long pants
  • Canyoning shoes (or boots/sneakers)
  • Wetsuit
  • Helmet
  • Gloves
  • Headlamp

Snacks and Water

Another essential thing to pack for a canyoning trip is food and water. Some canyoning tours can last an entire day! Our bodies need fuel to function, and canyoning is a demanding activity, so you’ll want to bring along some stuff to munch on along the trail.

Make sure to bring plenty of bottled water and pre-prepared snacks that are easy to carry around, not messy, and full of protein. PB&J sandwiches, protein bars, crackers and cheese, jerky, and trail mix are all good treats to bring along.

The Necessary Equipment

If you’re a canyoning beginner embarking on a canyoning tour, the chances are good that the company you’re touring with will provide most, if not all, the equipment you need. But if you’re canyoning solo, here’s what you’ll need on hand:

  • Harness
  • Descender
  • Carabiners
  • Rope
  • Knife
  • Whistle
  • Safety line
  • Prusik cord

You should also carry a map of the area for easy navigation and a first aid kit for health and safety emergencies. And there you have it: the essential items you need to pack for a canyoning trip. With these vital items in hand, you can go about your abseiling, hiking, and swimming safely.
