Fsa Vero Compact Crankset Review:

Worth the cash, powerful, strong 11 speed chain, neat finishers….

True Value and Performance

I have been riding this crankset on my commuter for approximately two months now -distance ridden approximately 1,200 miles. I have worn the chain through and the tensioner nuts were very tight when I installed the first chain. I used an old road bike and a repair stand to check the components and I am well pleased. The cranks can be turned by hand a couple of inches – evidence of no side to side play and good bearing seals. The chain moves smoothly over the crank arms with no rubbing. I like the design of the supplied inner rings. I was wary of the square edges thinking an edge would dig into the chain. I have been running a KMC X11-93 chain and have had no issues with shifting. The crank arms are covered in black plastic. This begins to rub off with use but I think this is just normal wear and being exposed to the elements. To sum up – a great crank set with a hidden value – a performance crank set for a recreational price.

Suggestion For Improvement

I have had no problems with the crank set and I would give it five stars except for my suggestion for improvement. Why can’t FSA have their own crank and chainring bolt color to match the crank set? I know that there are cranksets out there that allow for individual color choices – in my opinion this should be standard.

The FSA Gossamer Compact Crankset impresses with great price, comprehensive specifications and performance.

FSA has been around for a long time and is well respected in the cycling industry. They are now offering an entire line of components under one name. This is a great marketing tactic that I have always preferred. When researching a potential product it is not necessary to flip back and forth through different catalogs to find what you want.

The Gossamer crankset is a good example of FSA’s strategy to introduce a product line. This crank set is aimed at riders who want performance and feel a little guilty about buying off the shelf components – good marketing here. The pursuit of weight is always at issue in the cycling industry and the Gossamer crank does not disappoint. It is built quite well with all forged aluminum parts sitting atop cnc-machined chain rings and an integrated plastic chain ring guard. The crank arms are a little long, some may prefer a short crank but this is a personal decision. I like the design and build quality that is reminiscent of a much more expensive component like the Campagnolo Record.
