Great Off-Roading Destinations on the West Coast

In the U.S., there’s no shortage of amazing off-roading locations. In fact, there are so many, that planning your next adventure could be difficult. This list of great off-roading destinations on the West Coast can help you find the perfect trail.

Moab—Utah

Anyone who considers themselves an off-road enthusiast has to visit Moab, Utah at least once. The area is a rich tapestry of warm sand, scattered greenery, and snowy mountains overlooking the area from afar. Not only are the views incredible, but the area is full of exciting off-roading trails.

Hotspots include Hell’s Revenge, Poison Spider Mesa, and Moab Rim—though these are only a few of the many exciting trails in the area. No matter what trail you take, you’ll get to see the scenic views.

Rubicon Trail—California

Although it’s only one trail instead of many, the Rubicon Trail features diverse, breathtaking scenery. This 22-mile-long trek will take off-roaders through the stunning Sierra Nevada mountain range. You’ll encounter rocky roads and brilliant green forestry along this moderately challenging trail, but as long as your vehicle has the right hardware, it shouldn’t be too difficult.

Sawtooth National Recreation Area—Idaho

This location in Idaho provides hundreds of miles of land for off-roaders. From bold mountains to shimmering bodies of water, off-roading in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area has plenty to offer. This off-roading hotspot is particularly great for ATVs, though Jeeps and pickup trucks are still viable options. And Sawtooth provides great spots for fishing and hiking, so you certainly won’t suffer from boredom during your visit.

However, although you might be up for off-roading, your ride might not be. Pickup truck owners must understand the ground clearance off-roading requires. If you don’t take ground clearance into consideration when off-roading, you can wind up damaging your pickup in the process. Know your truck’s limits and implement modifications when necessary.
