The Godfather of touring bike tyres, the Marathon Touring Tyre has received an overhaul to make it even better. It now features Schwalbe’s “GreenGuard”, which is a highly elastic, 3mm thick rubber layer and has an “Anti-Aging” sidewall construction. This means this multi-purpose tyre can withstand the typical cracking that results from overloading due to insufficient inflation pressure. And to complete the set, this Schwalbe Marathon Touring Tyre – GreenGuard is E-Bike ready, so you can use it on E-Bikes with a speed of up to 50kph.

Schwalbe Marathon Greenguard Tyre Review:
“Superb handling. This was the absolute highlight. The rubber compound has a very soft feel, which creates a buttery smooth ride and a little bit of cushioning. But beware – this tyre is very supple, so it doesn’t like being run at low pressures – I found it was perfect run at ~6-8 bar. Despite being so flexible, wet traction is excellent. The GreenGuard does an excellent job of protecting the foam core, so even under heavy braking the tyre doesn’t go squirrely and feels planted. Cornering tread performance is excellent, though if you’re planning on cornering hard, be prepared for some lever buzz as the tyre drags on the asphalt. Weight wise, it comes in at 520g for the 28×1.25 size, which is on the lighter end of the scale. How does it stack up on the road? Well, it’s marketed as a “Soft, Safe Road Tyre”, and that’s a pretty accurate description. The ride quality is buttery smooth and extremely comfortable, and it even works quite well in dirty, wet weather. It’s very good in tricky conditions and requires very little pressure to get rolling, which is essential if you’re running a lot of pressure to avoid pinch punctures on rough ground. At the same time, however, the low pressure makes it harder to maintain balance when cornering hard, and it can’t hold its own against a rigid tire in more extreme conditions. If you plan on doing a lot of riding on a wide range of surfaces, though, it may be a great choice for you.
Overall, I quite like the GreenGuard. It’s an excellent, multi-purpose tyre suited to a wide range of cyclists. It can be run tubeless for extra comfort, but beware of low tire pressures. It’s well suited to fast paved roads or major cycle paths, but it’s not going to impress you on rocky terrain or light off-road sections.
Four out of five stars. “
Schwalbe Marathon Greenguard Tyre Review:
“The 28 mm GreenGuard Marathon Premium is wider than the standard Marathon, to safely accommodate touring load balances and makes for a comfortable ride. The gasket is made in Germany and is certified by the TÜV. The technology makes the GreenGuard more flexible and resilient against punctures. Schwalbe’s SmartGuard (polyamide fabric) has been used in the longitudinal direction of the GreenGuard. This layer is applied for self-healing purposes by bending and folding.
The 120 tpi carcass and the protective material are non-studdable. The GreenGuard has a Weight: 520 g (28 mm) and a PaceStar compound with low rolling resistance and good braking properties. As a result, its grip on asphalt and on wet leaves near the forest road is good. It seldom happened that on a crossing the bicycle tended to collapse at hard braking in wet leaves. This was also observed in salted winter road. On dry surfaces, the grip is also very good. Therefore, in the usual case of minor deviations and inclines, pedaling is easy and a good speed can be obtained.
In the pothole shot, when the surface is wet and chilly, the tires and rims are heavily stimulated. The GreenGuard did as well as other Marathon tires. With my heavy touring load it was quite obvious that the breadth of the GreenGuard was too narrow. The same effect showed itself when I drove up a paved hill on my loaded bicycle. I needed more air inside the rim when I observed that the GreenGuard was fully rolled in.
In addition to the increased breadth of the Marathon GreenGuard, there is another argument for thicker tires with load balance: The weight increases with each tire that is added to the cycle, but the carrying capacity of the wheels is not changed. So the issue is to balance the resulting vertical force. The 28 mm GreenGuard Marathon Premium obviously dominates on the wheels with load balance and can be said to be safe. However, it is possible to use it also with a normal load, as long as the balance is adjusted to the increased weight of the rider.”
The last Marathon version with 26 inch size was the “E-Bike Ready” Marathon Plus. It had a Kevlar reinforcement layer in the sidewall and a Vectran puncture protection breaker layer. The other two versions, without the Kevlar layer are the Marathon Winter and the regular Marathon Plus. A puncture protection breaker layer, with the size of this Marathon Plus, has already been tested on the Marathon Winter, which worked well, as far as I know. However, for the trials with the Marathon Plus tires with the GreenGuard and GreenGuard E, the plan was to change the casing proportion at several stages (30 percent, 40 percent, 50 percent, etc.) But this is not possible for a practical tire testing because it is so laborious, and it also makes the testing results not comparable. As the neoprene band in the coating on the Marathon GreenGuard E can be recognized in the inner side of the casing also, a thickness measurement evaluation with a standard calliper was also not possible, because the rubber layer should also have been measured. So what can be said about the safety of the Marathon Plus? For the driving trials with the Marathon Plus tires with the GreenGuard and GreenGuard E, the plan was to change the casing proportion at several stages (30 percent, 40 percent, 50 percent, etc.) But this is not possible for a practical tire testing because it is so laborious. Also, my colleague Jan for example, does not use the Marathon Pro as tire of choice for his every day use.
” Marathon is a tire that performs well on the wheel and is very easy to mount.
The GreenGuard is a security belt made of fabric.
The carcass of the Marathon Greenguard is a good touring tire. The tubeless version of the Marathon Greenguard is at a disadvantage to the regular Marathon, as the bead is not reinforced with Kevlar.
The GreenGuard is more flexible and softer than the ordinary Marathon. This is because of the fact that the GreenGuard has a proportionately high share of latex in the composition of the gum. It is the same gum that is already used for the Easy in addition to the GreenGuard. This makes the GreenGuard more sensitive to recent damage and makes it less suited to the Marathon. The GreenGuard technology has been introduced in the Marathon, but it seems to be intended for the City or the Performance.
The GreenGuard provides security to the modern cyclist, as the number of bicycle tire punctures have remained about the same while the number of cyclists has grown considerably.
The Marathon Greenguard is currently the widest GreenGuard Schwalbe offers and is wide enough for most bicycle wheels.
The Marathon Greenguard is a robust performer on the wheel and can be used for touring without any problems.
Ride comfort is higher than with the Marathon. The Marathon Greenguard runs very smooth and fast with a road feel that is as close to the road as possible, the GreenGuard is so sensitive that you feel the smallest stones.
The Marathon Greenguard is a very good choice for the wheel who wants to be safe, wants to save money and wants a fast tire, which is constantly threatened by poor road conditions.
Three out of five stars.
Tyres with the GreenGuard have a higher proportion of natural rubber. The reason behind this is the fact that natural rubber is more sensitive to recent damage and needs less energy to break out. The security belt is therefore included in the casing. The GreenGuard is just like the Easy to use and at the same time very different. In the GreenGuard, the raw rubber wound substances (gums) are included to strengthen the security belt. These material characteristics also determine the differences between the GreenGuard and the Easy. In the Easy, the rubber is not completely processed. The Easy is included in the Marathon, the GreenGuard in the Marathon Plus.
The Marathon GreenGuard has the highest share of latex in the gum of the Marathon range.
