Mavic Aksium Disc Wheelset Review:
The Mavic Aksium is the perfect wheel for everyday riding…
As the name suggests, the Mavic Aksium Disc is essentially an enhanced Aksium with disc brakes added to the front. The wheels themselves are a similarly excellent product to the rim brake version that this review is based on.
The wheels feature build quality that belies its price tag, with the rims boasting plenty of spokes and high-grade aluminium for stiffness and durability. The rim feels a little more rounded than the Aksium’s competitors, helping the wheel to be extremely robust and also helping to boost comfort levels. The disc brake equipped version has received the same high-quality build treatment, complete with stainless steel spokes and brass nipples.
The tyres that are supplied with the Aksium Disc are decent, but they definitely won’t win awards. However, they do offer an excellent balance between durability and value for money, and they do offer plenty of support for daily riding. You get 32mm tyres fitted to these wheels, a good size but you have the option to fit a 25mm tyre to the front of the wheel if you require less width.
In terms of ride quality, the Mavic Aksium Disc is comfortable in comparison to many, with a touch more give in the rim helping to offer a more rounded ride. The disc brake version is also quiet, and offers plenty of stopping power and modulation.
The Mavic Aksium Disc is comfortable in comparison to…
Ride quality:
The Aksium Disc certainly lives up to the expectations set by the rim brake version. It offers excellent ride quality with very low rolling resistance and plenty comfort in comparison to many other wheels in this price range. The larger 25-40mm tyre fitted to the front of the wheelset offers support that can compete with some more expensive wheelsets and this leads to a very forgiving and comfortable ride.
The disc brake model is even better with plenty of stopping power and plenty of modulation helping to make sure your bike stops in a controllable and predictable manner.
Braking performance:
The disc equipped version of the Aksium performs with the same verve as the rim brake version. In fairness this is about as good as it gets without spending a fortune. You get plenty of stopping power with great feel, although there is a vibration at the rim that can overtake comfort levels on rougher roads.
The disc equipped Aksium works from the centre which aids its performance, and the Aksium allows for plenty of adjusts thanks to the range of Tune Link levers it works with. The performance is enhanced even further when you consider that the Mavic Aksium Disc is about as light as a disc brake equipped wheelset can get.
It offers excellent ride quality with very low rolling resistance…
The wheelset is fairly heavy when compared to some of its competitors, but it is a well balanced wheelset and this helps to make it easy to accelerate even when you’re pushing the bike up a hill.
The wheelset itself is extremely durable thanks to the aluminium spokes and rims, and this helps to prolong the life of the wheel. This is especially true when you consider the price that you’re paying for the Mavic Aksium Disc.
If you decide to upgrade to a carbon wheel in the future then the Mavic Aksium Disc will actually increase in value for money thanks to the fact that the aluminium rims can be re-used on another wheel set.
Conclusion:
The Mavic Aksium Disc is an excellent first venture into the world of disc brake equipped cycling. It offers a good range of upgrades without breaking the bank, and the quality is hard to match for the price. The functionality of the disc brake equipped version doesn’t fall far behind that of the rim brake version either.
The wheelset itself can only be recommended for anybody looking to get the most bang for their buck on the disc brakes marketplace. It offers great performance and durability with very low rolling resistance.
