Nestled in central Turkey, Cappadocia has been shaped for millions of years by volcanic activity and erosion — it was shaped by two giant volcanoes, Erciyes and Hasan. An old Anatolian tale reads that two volcano gods were rivals that fought by spewing fire and ash and their battles sculpted Cappadocia’s valleys. Modern balloonists like to say the balloons’ flames “wake up” the ancient fire spirits every morning.
