Encinitas, California is home to Road Surfboard owner Bella Gilchrist, who has been shaping boards since she was just 13 years old with her dad. Road aims to make each board a unique work of art, hoping their surfboards will be the “Road” to somebody’s connection between themselves + nature. With inspiration from Wayne Lynch, the 1971 film Sea of Joy, + the retro vibe Gilchrist grew up on, she creates boards based on who they’re for. She is grateful when she paddles out on the waves to ride what she calls the, "ripples of the Earth".
Sustainability is another driving force in Gilchrist’s work. At Road, they use “BIO” surfboard blanks made by Arctic Foam to create algae based sustainable surfboards. When crafting a board, Gilchrist tries fins up + down, + every which way to feel out what is right for each board + working with FCS allows her to do this with ease.
