GoPro Awards: Saving a Life

Carson Schmidt and Erik Masuda didn’t hesitate when they spotted a terrifying scene on the mountain: a skier trapped upside down in deep snow, one of the most dangerous situations in winter sports.

In heavy powder conditions, snow submersion accidents can happen fast. Skiers and snowboarders can become disoriented, buried, and unable to breathe within seconds if their airway is blocked.

Watch as Carson and Erik act quickly, stay calm under pressure, and heroically perform a life-saving rescue by digging toward the victim’s face to clear their airway.

Ski & Snowboard Safety Reminder:
– Always ride with a partner on deep powder days
– Keep each other in sight at all times
– Be aware of tree wells and deep snow hazards
– Act FAST in an emergency—every second counts

If you ever face a situation like this, stay calm, assess quickly, and prioritize clearing the airway immediately. For more information on winter safety, head to
